Fandom 5k 2019

Hello, dear Fandom5k author!

I hope you're not too nervous. I'm a fairly easy recipient and tend to like most of the stuff I receive as long as my DNWs are avoided. If something looks confusing or you're just generally worried I might not like what you're writing, you can ask through a mod, but if I were you I wouldn't worry too much.

Most of the stuff I've put here is already in my sign-up. No surprise!DNWs or extra prompts here, just a few general notes about what kind of writing I like, so if you want to skip this you can.

ETA after sign-ups closed, before assignments went out: I'm also adding a few general notes about the genre tags, even when they're pretty self-explanatory and I'm not too hung up on using them in a single very specific way. Maybe they'll help?

DO NOT WANT:
  • noncon
  • character death
  • hopeless endings
  • porn without feelings
  • friends with benefits
  • hatesex
  • D/s dynamics
  • poly
  • daddy/mommy kink
  • age/size kink
  • humiliation
  • pregnancy
  • focus on kids or pets
  • AUs other than canon divergence
  • crossovers
  • in f/f hair braiding/brushing being a big thing

    GENERAL LIKES AND PROMPTS:
Things I will always like, no matter the fandom

  • Canon-divergent AUs, forks in the road, what if X instead of Y, fix-its for unhappy endings

  • Angst and (mutual) pining

  • Hurt/comfort of any type and level, from minor wound tending to handling mind control situations, torture and PTSD

  • Internalized homophobia when it fits the canon (esp. if eventually learned/taught out of)

  • Having to share a space (anything from a single tiny sleeping bag to space shuttles to snowed-in cabins to whatever else you can think of - it's the 'I can't run away and ignore/hide my feelings oh no' that I adore)

  • Enemies/rivals having to work together and making a truce, temporary or otherwise

  • All the touching! From the tiniest of accidental (or "accidental") brushes to carrying someone wounded and having to unclothe them, helping out with difficult clothes/gear, dancing etc.

  • Undercover jobs from the sweetest "we have to fake being a couple" to the most painful "I must watch you get beaten up and can't do anything" (having to hurt the other doesn't work the same as having to watch, though I'd take both)

  • Time travel tropes of any kind in canons where it happens or is plausible: Groundhog day, traveling to the past/future and getting (temporarily) stuck there, time moving slower/faster than it does for others in a certain space, messages through time, altering history or future

  • First times (touches, dates, kisses, sex, arguments, anything first really)

  • Porn with feelings (friends: being able to express how they feel, enemies/rivals: realizing that oh no, it's more than simple lust)

PORN LIKES (M/M OR F/F): Anything vanilla is always ok, but also blindfolds, a bit of tying up or holding wrists, teasing and mild painplay (except genitalia, please). Everything from frottage to handjobs to penetration, or just coming before they even really begin. Not big on intercrural but I don't dislike it. Fine with rimming. Condoms optional. In m/m, lube or anything to replace it not optional. :D In f/f smut, tongue/fingers/sex toys/vaginal/anal are all delicious.

Unless specified I'm fine with either one being the top/bottom. I prefer touching and random interjections and pleads to long conversations during sex, and I'd like you to keep pet names like baby or honey to the absolute minimum (unless they're canonical).

OTHER FIC-RELATED INFO: I'm fine with any rating, from G to NC-17, and this goes for both sexual content and violence. I tend to prefer 3rd person POV, but 1st and 2nd person POVs aren't a problem if you feel the fic needs to be that way. Any tense goes. So basically, don't feel too restrained by stylistic choices. I'll read whatever you write. :) Well, I twitch at then/than, your/you're, there/their/they're, to/too mix-ups, the word villian, and misspelled character names. I can't help it.

    GENRE TAGS:

Action/Adventure: Anyone going on adventures/road trips/missions/investigations/etc. is always loved. I see action here meaning that they do stuff instead of the fic being introspection, not that there should be fight scenes or car chases like it's an action movie.

Angst: Sadness, pining, wistfulness, however you want to interpret it. Maybe not all 5k words of it, but it can be a major part of it as long as the ending is hopeful (i.e. it doesn't include my DNW of hopeless endings).

AU - Canon Divergence: This is fairly broad to me. Episode tags, missing scenes, smaller changes in the canon (swapping two characters on missions, or a character choosing to take Road A instead of Road B, or X happens differently or not at all, etc.) that may have minor consequences or snowball into some major changes. If the canon is science fiction, I also view visits to mirror universes and alternate/parallel universes as a sort of canon divergence, as long as the other setting is similar and can be seen as "if X had happened, we'd have Y like they do here".

Canon-Style Plot - Freeform: If the style is good enough for the canon, it's good enough for me. Monsters of the week, ending up in peril again and again, solving a case and calling it a day, bleak and hopeless surroundings with glimpses of hope, whatever the canon is, sticking to a similar style is always good as long as it's not in my DNWs.

Character Development: Developing minor/less known characters, if they're been requested, is always welcome. Further developing already known characters, e.g. giving them more background, is also lovely.

Fix-it fic: If there's a death of my ship character, I'd like it to be fixed. If there's another bad/sad/miserable ending, I'd like it to be fixed. If a character chose something that means the ship never happened, I'd like it to be fixed so that it does. So very similar to canon divergence, really. If you see something broken there, I'd like a fix for it.

Getting Together: I'm always here for my ships getting together. I will never ever tire of it. It's often a part of what I love about books/movies/shows and it's what I'll always love about fics as well. It just makes me happy to see people find someone and get them.

Horror: I love it when my otherwise mundane shows do scary episodes where the characters wonder if they're hallucinating/going crazy/haunted/cursed even when the explanation usually isn't supernatural at all. I also love seeing horror elements in scifi or case-solving/mystery canons, so alien possessions in space, suddenly sentient objects, hauntings of people long passed, nightmares, telepathically forced horror scenes, Final Destination type "you shouldn't have survived so you're marked now" twists, etc. would be wonderful additions where I've tagged horror as a welcome tag. I don't want it everywhere but where I do I like it a lot.

(Just no "everyone dies the end" because that'd be my hopeless endings DNW and I'd be very unhappy. I'm also not into sexy tentacles, but tentacles can exist if they're someone's dinner.. or attached to a monster that just happens to have them but doesn't use them for anything sexual.)

Humor: Canon-typical humour is always wonderful. Banter and quips, snarky comments and well-meaning jabs, all that. But also upbeat stories and humorous prose and turns of phrase. If I've tagged it, then as long as it's not crack-level ridiculousness, I welcome it.

Hurt/Comfort: Fairly self-explanatory. I like all kinds of h/c, from physical to mental to emotional. So break their leg, torture them, leave them second-guessing their choices, make them witness the other being hurt, whatever hurt you choose it's good as long as there's also comfort.

Interpersonal Drama: If it has more than one person in it, and they interact and somehow need the other one to further the plot (so it's not both in isolation writing their diaries about themselves, never to even acknowledge the other exists), it's fine. It could be co-operation, it could be conflict, it could be anything.

Mystery/Procedural: Casefic is always lovely regardless of canon, and I love mysteries and solving them. I'm not into court drama, so maybe don't go into that part of the procedure a lot? Unless it's a weird alien court that makes absolutely no sense, but even then I'd rather not have 5k words of it.

scifi/fantasy: Fairly obvious. :D If it's scifi, I'll love more scifi in it. Same for fantasy. This is probably meant to be added to canons where it's not already canonical, but *shrug*. I added it anyway.

Smut: If it's not a mindless PWP, it's good. I don't require explicit smut with my ships but I do enjoy it a lot if the author likes to write it. So including this is fine if I've tagged it, but it doesn't mean I need it to be there. Fade to black or just ending the thing with a first kiss is equally cherished.

I think I explained all the tags I've used, but if I've left out some, sorry. If something needs further explanation or sounds like it's in conflict with a stated DNW, you can always ask through a mod. If you feel like you have a slightly different view on the tag or an idea that I haven't mentioned here, it's ok to use your own judgment. Do you think it fits the tag? Then it's probably fine. :)

    FANDOMS IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER:

    The Alienist [Laszlo Kreizler/John Moore]
Dark Matter (TV) [One | Derrick Moss/Three | Marcus Boone]
    The Exorcist [Marcus Keane/Peter Osborne]
The Orville [Ed Mercer/Gordon Malloy, Kelly Grayson/Pria Lavesque]
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine [Julian Bashir/Miles O'Brien, Julian Bashir/Jake Sisko, Vic Fontaine/Nog, Jadzia Dax/Lenara Kahn]
Star Trek: Discovery [Hugh Culber/Ash Tyler, Christopher Pike/Ash Tyler, Christopher Pike/Spock]
    The Terror [Thomas Jopson/Francis Crozier]

Making a note here that since some of these shows are similar (Deep Space 9, Discovery, Orville), feel free to poke around and see if one of them has something that inspires you in another fandom. I've also requested some of these before so there are more prompts in previous letters. My tastes haven't changed a lot, so as long as you keep to the current DNWs they should be mostly ok as well.

    THE ALIENIST
    Laszlo Kreizler/John Moore

    Action/Adventure
    Angst
    AU - Canon Divergence
    Canon-Style Plot - Freeform
    Getting Together
    Horror
    Hurt/Comfort
    Mystery/Procedural
    Smut

I'd love a new case for them to solve or be involved with. Whether it's life-threatening or something more mundane is up to you. It could be interesting to have something that's closer to horror and supernatural (whether it really is that or only seems to be - ghosts, hauntings, possessions, the undead, or just plain creepy sacrificial rituals) than realistic, so feel free to go off on an AU tangent there as long as it's not a modern day AU. No dragons, catpeople or flesh-eating zombies, please.

But I'd also love a bit of their everyday life. Navigating social events and gauging whether the other one is interested in them in a more than platonic way. Meetings in secret. Helping out with a personal problem (financial, post-traumatic stuff, a canon-related loss).

Re: that no kids DNW, the boys from the show can show up in the story as long as it doesn't focus solely on them.

    DARK MATTER (TV)
    One | Derrick Moss/Three | Marcus Boone

    Action/Adventure
    AU - Canon Divergence
    Fix-it fic
    Getting Together
    Horror
    Mystery/Procedural
    Hurt/Comfort
    scifi/fantasy
    Smut

All the scifi tropes, esp. time travel and parallel universe ones, alien devices screwing things up, clones/androids, aliens doing mindtricks on them, or just general space maraudering while occasionally being a hero. I adore most of the cast but these two will always be the twosome that I never got to keep. I loved how they barely got along, and I wish we could've seen them realize that they really are on the same side.

I'd love a rescue mission with either one doing the rescuing, or them being stuck on a mission that's really not going great at all. I'd love a fix-it. I'd love anything that has One in it being alive and well, though temporary death is perfectly acceptable.

    THE EXORCIST
    Marcus Keane/Peter Osborne

    Getting Together
    Hurt/Comfort
    Angst
    Horror
    Smut
    AU - Canon Divergence
    Canon-Style Plot - Freeform

I just want a happy Marcus with someone to share his burden and call his family and home, and while I love Marcus/Tomas so, so much, I'd love to see how he is with Peter. I feel like they need each other and understand each other in a way that, say, Tomas or Bennett wouldn't. Peter is also a way out of the draining world of exorcism.

While it's not necessary, I would love it if you could incorporate some kind of a horror element, maybe as a means to lead them together? Marcus protecting Peter, or the other way around, with Peter helping out in a way that he can (whether it's the cliffhanger with Tomas or something you made up). Or maybe something darker with Peter being possessed. I'm fine with all levels of horror and messed up darkness as long as the outcome is hopeful.

I'm not usually into domestic fics, but as long as the fic's not focused on apartment hunting or curtain buying then I have nothing against seeing them figure out how to share a place together.

Tomas can be a part of the fic or not, I'm fine with either, but no Marcus/Tomas even as a past thing, please.

    THE ORVILLE
    Ed Mercer/Gordon Malloy
    Kelly Grayson/Pria Lavesque

    Action/Adventure

One of the reasons I love this show so much is that it can always go either funny or serious, and you never quite know. You could get a flirty and mellow alien, or someone ingests bits of another alien for a joke, or you're facing fullblown genocide. So your fic could be either, or neither, or a mix. Your choice.

Ed Mercer/Gordon Malloy: I'd love anything, from their early friendship years (Drunken bar nights? Lost bets? Pre-wedding angsting from Gordon's side or post-divorce comfort?) to working together on The Orville. Would also love any mission gone wrong fic, whether it's humorous and silly like sharing a prison cell and bickering and coming up with stupid ways to let their prisoners free them, or something more serious with their lives at stake. Or, there hasn't been a virtual reality/alien hallucinatory mindfuck episode yet, but I'd love to see one.

Kelly Grayson/Pria Lavesque: I just love the idea of these two women together, ok? I'd take anything from one night curiosity to casual time travel dating or more. Or how would the episode Pria have happened if you replaced Ed with Kelly? I would also love to get Pria join the crew somehow, whether it's permanently or whenever she feels like showing up and tagging along (or saving their asses from peril).

    STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE
    Julian Bashir/Miles O'Brien
    Vic Fontaine/Nog
    Julian Bashir/Jake Sisko
    Jadzia Dax/Lenara Kahn

    Action/Adventure

For any of these, I'd be happy with missions, shore leaves, going camping on an alien planet, visiting alien cultures, mirror universe trouble, or whatever else you can think of. I'm not too picky as long as it's the ship I request and my DNWs are avoided. Holodeck adventures can be fun but please don't abuse it only to get a different setting AU where DS9 barely exists.

Julian Bashir/Miles O'Brien: This hits my friends-to-lovers button hard, so however you make them a couple (even for a while) will make me happy. Just don't give me a friends with benefits (listed under DNWs) because these two having casual sex without wanting to be together leaves me completely cold. I do have a weakness for episodes where Miles gets hurt, so if you can add some comfort from Julian that'd be great. Or turn it the other way around. I'd also take something more lighthearted and fun and not angsty at all.

Jadzia Dax/Lenara Kahn: Gah, I just want this couple of have its chance. So any fix-it or a canon-divergence take on Rejoined (4x06) would be wonderful. Or maybe they date in secret.

Julian Bashir/Jake Sisko: Something set later in the show, please, from S5 onwards. The episode that made me even consider this ship is Nor the Battle to the Strong (5x04) (so much potential for h/c during or after), so you could use that as your starting point. Or another episode/setting during the show or somewhere post-canon. Or maybe a canon divergence take where Jake becomes interested in medicine instead of writing, or combines them?

Vic/Nog: I only thought about this ship a couple years back when I saw someone request it. I frowned, then watched the episode It's Only a Paper Moon (7x10) with this in mind, and omg, it makes so much sense. Now I can't not see it. Nog finding comfort and peace with Vic in his safe little world, Vic figuring out what living means. Aww. I would love them to continue their arrangement, or maybe Nog keeps making visits to Vic. Re: age kink DNW, acknowledging the obvious difference is perfectly fine, I just don't want either one to get their kicks out of it and go "ooh, he's so young/old, yum".

    STAR TREK: DISCOVERY
    Hugh Culber/Ash Tyler
    Christopher Pike/Ash Tyler
    Christopher Pike/Spock

    Action/Adventure
    AU - Canon Divergence
    Angst
    Canon-Style Plot - Freeform
    Getting Together
    Hurt/Comfort
    Mystery/Procedural
    scifi/fantasy
    Smut

As the show's still ongoing, I don't mind if your fic gets jossed. Pick a point in time you feel like picking, whether it's the latest episode out or an earlier one that's more convenient for you. It all falls under canon divergence and I like canon divergence, so canon-compliance isn't a big issue for me. :)

Canon ships that could get in the way: Please, no infidelity unless you feel it's absolutely necessary. Have any couples separated or broken up or on a break instead of going behind the partner's back. Michael/Ash is my canon OTP and Hugh/Paul is super sweet, so deliberately hurting Michael or Paul or bashing them to make the other ship look good is not going to make me happy.

Hugh Culber/Ash Tyler: I almost felt bad for nominating this, because Culber/Stamets has been such a loving, happy couple, but I see this Hugh as someone new with new potential. He's Hugh and not, stuck somewhere in the middle where he's almost but not quite himself. And Ash, he's both and neither, and it's just as confusing and lonely.

I love the idea that the only other person who can get even a glimpse of what it must feel like to be so alien to oneself is the one who caused you so much pain. I also love the chance for redemption, for doing things differently, for making amends, creating something new. So of course I love the idea of this ship! It's got everything from guilt to hate to confusion and more. I'd love to see how these two can bond and make things better. They can be as hostile in the beginning as you want, it's all good, but I'm not into hateships so I'd prefer they drop the hostilities somewhere along the way.

Christopher Pike/Ash Tyler: To be honest, I'm not terribly picky with this. I just like the idea a lot. :D There's mistrust, there's Section 31, there's two ultimately good guys who should theoretically become great friends but it's not that easy when one is a murderous ex-Klingon. But surely they can become something, given time? Something forcing them to work together would be one solution. Saving another's life has also been a good way to prove you're not that bad.

Christopher Pike/Spock: This is a ship that makes me curious. I'd love to see how they were (and worked) together before either one was introduced to us, whether it's before the Red Angel stuff began or during it. But I'd also love to see how they are now when they're not on their own ship. This section is very light on prompts and ideas because I don't really have anything specific in mind. I like both characters a lot so I'm sure I'll also like whatever you end up writing.

    THE TERROR
    Thomas Jopson/Francis Crozier

    Action/Adventure
    Angst
    AU - Canon Divergence
    Horror
    Getting Together
    Fix-it fic
    Hurt/Comfort
    Mystery/Procedural
    Smut

I'm not picky with this one. I just want it. It could be something pre-canon back home, a missing piece that mostly fits the canon, a post-canon haunting of some kind (horror/fantasy/supernatural elements welcome here if you want to go there), or a canon divergence with a different outcome or character getting switched. What if the mission never failed and they achieved their goal? What if a few of them lasted just long enough to get rescued? What if Crozier has to bargain with something in order to keep a person? What if there's an afterlife but instead of Heaven it's just all of them stuck in that desolate place? I'd still prefer to have my hopeful ending, but it doesn't have to be a "they all lived happily ever after". Just a chance that they might, or ending before doom is inevitable.
